Bodhizazen originated from the dhyana of the Buddha. This form of meditation evolved from the Indian dhyana and is known as the “bodhi mind”. In fact, bodhizazen can be performed by anyone, regardless of their belief system or background. While the Bodhidharma is considered the most important text in the Buddhist tradition, many of its practitioners misunderstood its meaning.
The earliest descriptions of bodhizazen date back to the fifth century. Dousen incorrectly included the Bodhidharma in his section devoted to shuzen (dhyana). The shikantaza method is an expression of the mind that is free from all techniques and goals. While the Bodhidharma is considered the most important Buddhist text, it is often distorted by later scholars. However, despite the differences between zazen and dhyana, they share a common ground in their basic structure. The shikantaza practice aims at realizing the Bodhidharma’s teachings.
Bodhizazen is the most popular form of zazen and is often referred to as “bodhi mind”. It is a powerful practice of self-realization and is open to all. No prior knowledge of Buddhism is required. Most people are welcome to learn bodhizazen, and the benefits are great. It’s important to make it a habit to meditate regularly. If you’re a beginner, try doing it at home first.
